It is Almost Time — Trunk or Treat and Costume Fun is Coming to Nurture Pediatrics

October is here, the air is getting cooler, and we are counting down the days to one of our favorite nights of the year. Nurture Pediatrics is hosting our annual Trunk or Treat and Costume Fun event on Friday, October 23, 2026 from 5:00 to 7:30 PM at our Smyrna location, and we want every family in our community there with us.

What to Expect

Dust off the costumes, grab the candy bags, and get ready for a night filled with fun, laughter, and a whole lot of community spirit. Last year over 400 families joined us at 810 Medical Park for an evening of trick or treating, costume fun, and the kind of neighborhood energy that reminds you why community matters. This year we are raising the bar.

Why We Do This Every Year

Trunk or Treat started as a way for us to say thank you. Thank you for trusting us with your children. Thank you for choosing Nurture Pediatrics as your pediatric home. Thank you for being part of a community that shows up for one another.

We spend our days in exam rooms getting to know your families one visit at a time, and events like this give us a chance to step outside those walls and celebrate together. Seeing our patients in their Halloween costumes, watching siblings run from trunk to trunk, and getting to meet the grandparents and cousins who do not always make it to appointments — that is what this night is all about for us.

Pediatric care is about so much more than checkups and vaccines. It is about being woven into the fabric of a family's life, and nights like October 23rd are one of the ways we live that out.

Fall is here, and so is flu season. This year we are making it easier than ever to protect your family with our drive thru flu clinics at both our Smyrna and Nolensville locations. No waiting rooms, no long waits inside, just a quick and convenient stop that could make a big difference for your child's health this season.

Why a Drive Thru Flu Clinic

We know how busy fall gets for families. Between school, sports, activities, and everything in between, finding time for a traditional appointment can feel like one more thing on an already full list. Our drive thru clinics are designed with that in mind. Pull up, roll down the window, and our team will take care of the rest. It is that simple.

We also know that flu season does not wait, and neither should your family's protection. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that all children six months of age and older receive an annual flu vaccine, ideally by the end of October. Our drive thru clinic schedule is built to help every family in our community meet that window.

Appointments Are Required

To make sure our staff can plan appropriately and keep things moving smoothly for every family, appointments are required for our drive thru flu clinics. Walk-ins are not available for this event. Scheduling your appointment ahead of time also means less waiting for you when you arrive.

A Few Things to Know Before You Come

Please have your child's insurance card ready when you arrive. Let us know at the time of scheduling if your child has any known allergies, particularly egg allergies, or any medical conditions that may affect vaccine eligibility, so we can make sure the visit goes smoothly. If your child is receiving the flu vaccine for the very first time and is under nine years of age, they may need a second dose given at least four weeks later. We are happy to talk through that with you when you call.

What the Flu Shot Does for Your Family and Your Community

Getting your child vaccinated is not just about keeping them healthy, though it certainly does that. It also helps protect the people around them who may be more vulnerable, including newborns who are too young to be vaccinated, older family members, and classmates or friends with underlying health conditions. When more families in our community are vaccinated, the whole community benefits.

Fall Allergies in Tennessee: What Parents Should Know This Season

If your child has been sneezing more than usual, rubbing their eyes, or coming home from school with a runny nose that just will not quit, you are not alone. Fall allergy season in Tennessee is no joke, and for many kids it can feel just as miserable as spring. The good news is that there is a lot parents can do, and knowing what you are dealing with is the first step.

Why Tennessee Fall Allergies Hit Hard

Tennessee sits in a particularly tough spot when it comes to seasonal allergies. Our warm climate, humidity, and geography create a long and active allergy season that can stretch well into October and sometimes beyond. The biggest culprit in the fall is ragweed pollen, which peaks in Middle Tennessee typically from mid-August through October. One ragweed plant can release up to one billion pollen grains over the course of a season, and those grains travel easily on the wind, meaning your child does not have to be anywhere near a ragweed plant to feel the effects.

Beyond ragweed, mold spores are a significant trigger in the fall. As leaves fall and begin to decompose, mold levels in the air rise, particularly after rain. For children who are sensitive to mold, those beautiful piles of leaves in the backyard can be a source of real misery. Dust mites can also flare up as families close windows and turn on heating systems that have been sitting dormant all summer.

How to Tell If It Is Allergies or Something Else

This is one of the most common questions we hear from parents this time of year, and it is a fair one. Allergy symptoms and cold symptoms can look a lot alike, but there are some key differences to watch for.

Allergy symptoms tend to appear quickly after exposure, stick around as long as the trigger is present, and improve when your child is away from the allergen, such as inside with windows closed on high pollen days. Common signs include a clear runny nose, sneezing, itchy or watery eyes, and an itchy throat or ears. Fatigue and dark circles under the eyes, sometimes called allergic shiners, are also common.

A cold, on the other hand, usually comes with thicker, discolored mucus, a fever, body aches, and symptoms that tend to peak and then improve over the course of about ten days. If your child's symptoms are lingering well past two weeks without a fever, allergies are likely worth exploring.

What the American Academy of Pediatrics Recommends

The American Academy of Pediatrics emphasizes a stepwise approach to managing seasonal allergies in children, starting with the least invasive strategies and building from there based on how the child responds.

The first line of management is reducing exposure to known allergens. This means keeping windows closed on high pollen days, having children change clothes and wash their hands and face after outdoor play, using air purifiers with HEPA filters indoors, and checking daily pollen counts through resources like the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology's tracking tools. The AAP also recommends nasal saline rinses as a safe, drug-free way to clear allergens from nasal passages and reduce congestion.

When symptoms need additional management, the AAP recommends second-generation antihistamines as the preferred over-the-counter option for children. Medications like loratadine (Claritin), cetirizine (Zyrtec), and fexofenadine (Allegra) are generally preferred over first-generation antihistamines like diphenhydramine (Benadryl) for daily allergy management because they cause less sedation and have a longer duration of action. Intranasal corticosteroids, such as fluticasone (Flonase) or triamcinolone (Nasacort), are also considered highly effective and are now available over the counter for children aged two and older, though the AAP recommends discussing use with your child's provider before starting.

It is worth noting that the AAP does not recommend decongestants for children under four years of age due to safety concerns, and advises caution in older children as well. Combination cold and allergy products that include decongestants should always be discussed with your provider before use.

For children with moderate to severe allergies that are not well controlled with over-the-counter options, referral to a pediatric allergist may be appropriate. Allergy testing can identify specific triggers, and allergen immunotherapy, commonly known as allergy shots or sublingual drops, can offer longer-term relief for children who are good candidates.

When to Call Us

Allergies that are not well managed can affect your child's sleep, their ability to focus at school, and their overall quality of life during the season. They can also increase the risk of sinus infections and ear infections, and can make asthma harder to control in children who have both conditions.

We encourage families to reach out if your child's symptoms are interfering with daily life, if over-the-counter medications are not providing enough relief, if you are seeing signs of a sinus infection such as pressure, facial pain, or thick discolored mucus lasting more than ten days, or if your child has asthma and their symptoms seem harder to manage as the season changes.

You do not have to just push through allergy season. There are real options, and we are here to help you find what works best for your child.

A Few Quick Wins for This Week

Check the local pollen count before your child heads outside. Nashville and surrounding Middle Tennessee areas tend to have reliable daily counts available through weather apps and the AAAAI tracker. Keep outdoor activity to later in the day when pollen counts are typically lower. Run a HEPA air purifier in your child's bedroom, especially while they sleep. And if your child has not been seen for their allergies before, a well visit or dedicated appointment is a great place to start the conversation.

Back to School, Back on Track: What Every Family Should Do Before the Bell Rings

Summer goes fast. One minute you are at the pool, and the next you are hunting for a backpack and trying to remember where you put the school supply list. Before the chaos of the first day takes over, there is one item that deserves a spot at the top of your to-do list: your child's health.

At Nurture Pediatrics, we see it every year. Families rush in during the last two weeks of August because a school physical is required for enrollment, a sports form needs to be signed, or a medication check has not happened since spring. We love seeing your kids no matter when you come in, but we also know that scheduling early makes everything easier for your family and ours.

Here is what to think about before school starts:

Well visits and school physicals

Most schools require an updated physical on file, and for good reason. A well visit gives your child's provider a chance to check in on growth, development, vision, hearing, and overall health. It is also a great time to ask questions you have been holding onto since the last visit. If your child plays a sport, their TSSAA sports physical can be completed at the same time at no additional cost. For the 2026-2027 school year, physicals completed on or after April 15, 2026 are valid.

Immunizations

Back to school season is one of the most important times to make sure your child is up to date on required vaccines. Tennessee has specific immunization requirements by grade level, and schools do check. If you are not sure where your child stands, give us a call. We can pull their records and let you know what is needed before the first day.

Medication management

If your child takes a daily medication, summer can throw off the routine. Before school starts, make sure their prescription is current, refills are in order, and any forms needed by the school nurse are completed. A medication maintenance visit is required before we can process refill requests, so do not wait until the week before school to get this on the schedule.

Mental health check-in

Starting a new school year can bring up big feelings, especially for kids heading into a new school, a new grade, or navigating friendships and social pressures. It is worth taking a few minutes to talk with your child about how they are feeling about the year ahead. If you have concerns about anxiety, attention, or behavior, your child's well visit is a great place to start that conversation.

Meet Dr. Sowers

Meet Dr. Mackenzie Sowers

Some people find their calling. Dr. Mackenzie Sowers has been living hers for as long as we can tell, and we are so glad that path brought her to Nurture Pediatrics.

We are excited to welcome Dr. Sowers to our team this fall, and we have a feeling this introduction is one you will be glad you read.

Dr. Sowers earned her Bachelor of Science in Biology from the University of Alabama, where she was already making her mark long before she set foot in a medical school classroom. She served as president of Alpha Epsilon Delta, co-led The Society of Women in Medicine, and poured her time into community organizations focused on children and families. The thread running through all of it is advocacy, service, and a genuine investment in the people around her. That did not start in residency. It started here, and it has never stopped.

She went on to earn her Doctor of Medicine from UAB Marnix E. Heersink School of Medicine in Birmingham, where she served on the Admissions Committee, mentored third-year medical students, and volunteered at the Equal Access Birmingham clinic. She was not just training to be a physician. She was already being one. She completed her pediatric residency at Children's Health in Dallas, Texas, one of the leading children's health systems in the country, and brought every bit of that experience with her when she walked through our doors.

What sets Dr. Sowers apart is not just what she has accomplished on paper. It is how long she has been in and around patient care. Before and throughout her training, she worked as a Clinical Assistant at Children's of Alabama supporting specialty outpatient clinics, and as a Nurse Assistant in the perioperative department at William Beaumont Hospital. She understands what families go through when their child is sick, scared, or just needs someone to slow down and actually listen. That perspective is rare, and it shows in the way she works.

Dr. Sowers is committed to building real relationships with her patients and their families, providing care that is thoughtful, thorough, and centered on the whole child. She is not here to rush through a checklist. She is here to be a partner in your child's health for the long haul.

Meet Dr. Edmond — and a Little Personal News to Celebrate

We have been looking forward to this introduction for a while!

Nurture Pediatrics is thrilled to welcome Dr. Lauren Edmond to our Smyrna team. She officially joined us in July 2026, and if you have not had the chance to meet her yet, we think you are going to love her.

Dr. Edmond earned her Bachelor of Science in Neuroscience from Rhodes College in Memphis before going on to complete her Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine at Des Moines University College of Osteopathic Medicine. She completed her pediatric residency at Children's Hospital at Erlanger through the University of Tennessee College of Medicine Chattanooga and is board certified by the American Board of Pediatrics. She cares for patients from birth through young adulthood and sees patients Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday at our Smyrna location.

Before joining Nurture Pediatrics, Dr. Edmond served as the founding pediatrician at a new clinic in Sevierville, Tennessee — building a patient panel from the ground up and earning a reputation that speaks for itself. The families she cared for described a pediatrician who listens, who takes her time, and who makes you feel truly heard. That is exactly the kind of provider we look for at Nurture Pediatrics, and exactly why we are so glad she is here.

Her approach is warm, attentive, and rooted in building real relationships with the families she serves. She is not just checking boxes — she is genuinely invested in your child and in partnering with you at every stage of their growth and health. Outside of the office, Dr. Edmond enjoys life on the water, tending to her garden, experimenting in the kitchen, and spending time with her pets. If you ask us, that tells you a lot — she is the kind of person who brings that same care and attention to everything she does.

And now for the personal news we could not be more excited to share — Dr. Edmond is getting married later this fall and will be changing her name to Dr. Tennant. We wanted to give our families a heads-up now so there are no surprises when you see her new name in your patient portal or on appointment reminders. Same wonderful doctor, same exceptional care — just a new name and a very exciting new chapter.

Drive Thru Flu 2025

Your provider at Nurture Pediatrics recommends that all children 6 months and older get an annual flu vaccine.

During the winter months, transmission of the flu is expected to rise. Saturday Drive Up Flu Clinic schedule has been announced! Appointments available throughout the week as well.

Children six months and older are recommended to receive the flu vaccines to decrease the risk of serious complications of the flu.

Flu Mist nasal spray is also available for those two years and older.

Making sure your child is up to date on vaccinations is very important. Children younger than 5 and those with certain chronic conditions may be at increased risk for complications.

We’re so excited to invite our families and community to our Trunk or Treat event at Nurture Pediatrics Smyrna on Thursday, October 23, 2025, from 5:00–7:00 PM!

Nurture Pediatrics is thrilled to welcome Courtney Guiler DNP, a board-certified Pediatric Nurse Practitioner, to our care team beginning in Summer 2025. Courtney earned her Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) in Pediatric Primary Care from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, and brings a compassionate, patient-centered approach to caring for children from birth through young adulthood.

Courtney has extensive nursing experience, including several years as a school nurse with the Metro Nashville Public Health Department, where she managed complex student health needs and mentored new nurses. She has also worked in acute care settings, including pediatric cardiac step-down, intensive care, and emergency departments.

During her clinical training, Courtney completed over 500 hours of hands-on pediatric primary care experience, including rotations right here at Nurture Pediatrics and in specialty clinics such as pediatric endocrinology at Vanderbilt. Her clinical interests include behavioral health, pediatric diabetes education, adolescent e-cigarette use, and empowering families through clear, thoughtful guidance.

With a focus on whole-child we llness, Courtney is passionate about building trusting relationships with families and helping children grow into healthy, confident individuals. Outside of work Courtney enjoys spending time with her kids, outdoor activities as a family, and being involved in her church.

Your provider at Nurture Pediatrics recommends that all children 6 months and older get an annual flu vaccine.

During the winter months, transmission of the flu is expected to rise. Saturday Drive Up Flu Clinic schedule has been announced! Appointments available throughout the week as well.

Children six months and older are recommended to receive the flu vaccines to decrease the risk of serious complications of the flu.

Flu Mist nasal spray is also available for those two years and older.

Making sure your child is up to date on vaccinations is very important. Children younger than 5 and those with certain chronic conditions may be at increased risk for complications.

USFDA Recall: Nutramigen

Today, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is alerting parents, caregivers, and health care providers that Reckitt/Mead Johnson Nutrition has voluntarily recalled certain Nutramigen Hypoallergenic Infant Formula Powder products due to possible Cronobacter sakazakii contamination. No illnesses have been reported to date in connection with this recall, and it is likely most of the product that was distributed in the U.S. has already been consumed.

What is the new RSV vaccine Beyfortus?

RSV Immunization for Children 19 months and Younger

Nirsevimab (Beyfortus) is an immunization recommended for all infants younger than 8 months of age who are born during—or who are entering—their first Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) season. Except in rare circumstances, most infants younger than 8 months of age do not need nirsevimab if they were born 14 or more days after their mother got RSV vaccine. Nirsevimab is also recommended for some children age 8 through 19 months who are at increased risk for severe RSV disease and entering their second RSV season.

What is the RSV vaccine Beyfortus?

Beyfortus is not technically a vaccine, as it does not cause the body to make its own antibodies against RSV . Rather, it provides a dose of pre-made antibodies that provide “passive immunity” for at least 5 months. It has been shown to reduce the risk of serious RSV disease by 80%.

Who can get Beyfortus?

All babies born after March 1, 2023 are eligible this year. Newborns should ideally receive it in their first week of life. If a mother received the maternal RSV vaccine ( Abrysvo ) at least 14 days before the baby was born, the child is protected and will not need Beyfortus. High risk patients in their second RSV season may be eligible, which will be determined by your child’s provider.

What are the side effects of Beyfortus?

Pain
Redness, or swelling at the injection site
Mild rash
These were the most common side effects during clinical trials

My baby already had RSV this season, can they get Beyfortus?

Yes! Natural immunity from having RSV may last about 2 months, but the RSV season is much longer than that and infants can be reinfected with other strains of the virus. If they are eligible, it’s recommended that they get Beyfortus.

Can my infant get Beyfortus with other routine childhood vaccines?

Yes, it can be given at their checkup along with other vaccines . In clinical trials it was not shown to interfere with the body’s immune response to other routine vaccines.

How long does it take to start working?

It takes about 6 days to have full effect. The effect is strongest in the first several weeks and wanes over time.

How Do I Pay for Nirsevimab?

Vaccines for Children (VFC) program
Nirsevimab will be covered by VFC, a federally funded program that provides vaccines at no cost to children who might not otherwise be vaccinated because of inability to pay. Children younger than 19 years of age are eligible for the VFC Program if they belong to one or more of the following groups:

Medicaid-eligible
Uninsured
Underinsured
American Indian or Alaska Native

Private health insurance. Many private health insurance plans cover nirsevimab, but there may be a cost to you depending on your plan. Contact your insurer to find out.
